RESTORING THE RIVERLAND
Monday was a significant day with the formal launch by Mr David Papps, the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder, of the first flow of Commonwealth environmental water in South Australia.
With over 70 attendees at Clark’s Floodplain near Berri, the event marked the start of a five year, first of its kind, agreement between the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder and Nature Foundation SA. NFSA has access to an allocation of 50 gigalitres of Commonwealth environmental water over 5 years to rehabilitate River Murray floodplains and wetlands.
100 megalitres of water will be used at Clark’s Floodplain where the primary targets are; the creation of a sustaining healthy Black Box community, and to promote new germination of Black Box seedlings.
Localised environmental gains will help to provide refuge for endangered and threatened species but the broader context is the health of the Murray-Darling river system as a whole and the positive economic, social and cultural impacts of a healthy river system.

Scientists say governments need to seriously consider reintroducing dingoes to the landscape in order to protect vulnerable native species. Dingoes cause hundreds of thousands of dollars damage each year to livestock and there have been huge efforts to cull them by laying poisonous baits and shooting them. But this has allowed feral species like cats and foxes to thrive and experts say the current approach is counter-productive.
