FRACKING

Hydraulic Fracturing, also known as Fracking,  is the process of injecting pressurized fluid into rock layers to cause fractures. The rock layers contain natural gas, petroleum and other substances which then flow into a wellbore where it can be extracted.

Fracking was first used in 1947 but the modern fracturing technique that made it economical wasn't used until 1998 in Texas.

Vast amounts of previously inaccessible hydrocarbons can be extracted using the fracking method. Fracking has been used in more than one million U.S. wells that have produced more than seven billion barrels of oil and 600 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Environmental and health concerns include contamination of groundwater, air quality, the migration of gases and chemicals to the surface and the possibility of the mishandling of waste. A study from the U.S. concluded that exposure to gas drilling was implicated in serious health effects on humans and animals. France became the first nation to ban hydraulic fracturing in 2011.

SANTOS has been fracking for natural gas in outback South Australia for more than 40 years. The gas is piped to Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney. SANTOS says the industry needs to do more to educate the public about fracking.

Billions of dollars will be spent in Queensland over the next five years on coal seam gas wells, liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants and export facilities to exploit our world-class CSG reserves. The majority of that CSG-LNG gas is already contracted for sale to Asian customers.
